IRF Road Safety Auditors Registry
The IRF International Registry for Road Safety Auditors or the IRF Auditors Registry is a platform that provides a list of certified professionals qualified to conduct road safety audits, based on requirements established by the organisation.
These certified auditors perform formal and independent checks at all project stages from feasibility, preliminary & detailed design, during work and construction, pre-openings, and even conducting audits on existing roads.
With the support of TotalEnergies Foundation, the IRF Auditors Registry ensures quality, transparency and accountability in road design and maintenance. To be credible, audits must be carried out by professionals who are not part of the design team. This ensures difficult questions are asked, risks are seen without bias and vulnerable road users are considered and protected.
See if there are any accredited auditors in your country by going through the registry:
Despite growing recognition of the importance of road safety audits as a preventive tool, the practice has been fragmented: different countries apply varying standards, training programs differ widely, and the quality of audits is inconsistent.
Multilateral Development Banks and international donors increasingly require road safety audits as part of project design. However, they face a major challenge: how to identify qualified auditors and ensure that audits meet an internationally recognised level of competence.
IRF International Registry for Road Safety Auditors
The IRF International Registry for Road Safety Auditors is an initiative to address a critical gap in global road safety efforts. The IRF Auditors Registry will certify auditors based on clear training and experience criteria, strengthen local capacity, especially in low- and middle-income countries, by training and accrediting young professionals and women engineers and give governments, project owners, and financiers confidence that audit teams are composed of properly qualified professionals.
This registry serves multiple crucial functions:
Quality and Transparency
Accessibility and Accountability
Capacity Building and Equity
The effectiveness of a road safety audit depends entirely on the competence of the people conducting it. A proper audit must be undertaken by trained professionals, independent of the design team, and able to assess risks.
The Registry provides a searchable platform where governments, financiers, and operators can find certified auditors by country, grade, and stage of audit expertise.
The Registry creates a clear career pathway for young professionals, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Pilot programmes in Tanzania, Uganda, and India.
What is the International Registry of Road Safety Auditors?
The International Registry of Road Safety Auditors is an initiative to address a critical gap in global road safety efforts. This registry serves multiple crucial functions:
- Quality Assurance: It ensures transparency, accountability, and consistent high quality in road safety auditing worldwide.
- Standardisation: The registry enhances the establishment of an international standard for road safety auditors’ training and accreditation, addressing the problem of over proliferation of unverified courses and poor-quality audits.
- Resource Hub: It provides a reliable platform for identifying certified professionals qualified to conduct road safety audits, according to the requirements set for projects financed by Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and other authorities.
- Capacity Building: The registry facilitates the development of skills and competencies of local engineers in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), with a focus on young professionals and women in the field.
- Global Impact: By enhancing the quality of road safety audits, the registry aims to support safer roads and contribute to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 goal of reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries by at least 50% by 2030.
