Awards Categories
In a world where road crashes remain a leading cause of death and disability, the importance of effective road safety action cannot be overstated. We are looking for solutions that have demonstrated (quantitative and qualitative data) outstanding achievements in promoting road safety and reducing road crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
This category honours leadership and progress in protecting and promoting our planet’s natural resources and biodiversity via – amongst others – sustainable practices and tools throughout the different stages of the life-cycle of road infrastructure.
In an increasingly complex and unpredictable world, the International Road Federation understands the importance of effective response and management to ensure the safety and resilience of people, communities and economies. We seek nominees who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, strategic planning, and coordination in preparation for response and recovery from emergencies. Whether through the development of robust emergency plans, the implementation of innovative technologies, or the mobilisation of community resources, we look for those who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to saving lives and safeguarding communities.
This category honours outstanding achievement in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the transportation sector. This award celebrates organisations, projects, and/or initiatives that have demonstrated exemplary leadership, innovation, and commitment to fostering inclusive practices and embracing diversity in all its forms. Nominees will have made tangible commitments to inclusive practices and seen measurable results.
This award recognises solutions and practices optimising the lifecycle management of infrastructure assets, effective use of resources available and ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of transportation networks.
Highlighting projects or initiatives that address the challenges of climate change and promote resilience in road infrastructure systems, this category acknowledges efforts to mitigate the impact of climate-related risks, such as extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and temperature fluctuations, while also promoting adaptation measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of transportation networks.
Honouring initiatives or projects that contribute to the decarbonisation of the transportation sector and promote the principles of the circular economy. This category recognises efforts to reduce carbon emissions, minimise waste generation, and maximise resource efficiency throughout the lifecycle of road infrastructure projects.
Celebrating innovations in traffic management and intelligent transportation systems that enhance mobility, efficiency, and safety on road networks. This category recognises technologies, strategies and practices that optimise traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve the overall performance of transportation systems and quality of services to end-users.
This category recognises projects, initiatives, tools that address the unique challenges of urban transportation and promote sustainable mobility solutions and infrastructure in urban areas. This category celebrates efforts to enhance accessibility, reduce congestion, improve air quality, and create more livable and vibrant cities through innovative urban road and mobility projects.
Highlighting projects or initiatives that improve connectivity, accessibility, and socio-economic development in rural areas through the development of rural road infrastructure and services. This category acknowledges efforts to address the specific needs and challenges of rural communities, including improving access to essential services, promoting economic opportunities, and enhancing resilience to natural hazards.
This category celebrates excellence in the design, development, and manufacturing of equipment and machinery for the road sector. This category celebrates innovations that improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in road construction, maintenance, and operation, while also promoting technological advancements and best practices in equipment manufacturing.
Highlighting excellence in project management and financing practices for road infrastructure projects. This category recognises innovative approaches to project planning, execution, and financing that optimise resources, mitigate risks, and deliver successful outcomes, ensuring the timely and cost-effective delivery of transportation projects.
This category celebrates excellence in the design, construction, and maintenance of bridges and tunnels. This category honours projects, practices, technologies that demonstrate exceptional engineering innovation, structural integrity, and resilience of bridge and tunnel infrastructure, enabling safe and efficient transportation across challenging terrains and water bodies.

Evaluation Criteria
It describes the ability – amongst others – to minimise environmental impact throughout the lifecycle. A submission will be deemed sustainable if e.g. it promotes resource efficiency, reduces waste generation, and conserves energy, natural resources and biodiversity. The sustainability of a solution will also be evaluated according to its social and economic dimensions and resilience to future challenges
Replicability evaluates the potential for widespread adoption and application of a solution across different eg. geographic regions, project scales, and infrastructure types. A solution will be considered replicable if it can be easily scaled, adapted, and implemented in various contexts, to accommodate diverse project requirements and stakeholder needs. Additionally, solutions will be judged on their flexibility, modularity, and ability to evolve with the changing world.
A solution will be deemed innovative based on its novelty and creativity, its sustainable and ethical considerations, alongside any technological advancement. To be innovative a solution can either be original, or represent an innovative evolution of an existing process, practice, technique.
The impact of a solution describes its ability to significantly deliver concrete outcomes. Whether in terms of the change they have made to the quality of life of citizens, of users, of professionals in the sector or in advancing overall the transport sector, solutions will be judged on their tangible results. The IRF Awards aim to celebrate work that makes a significant and lasting difference in the mobility sector.
